It does depend on whether you have a control panel or not. If you have CPanel then it is easy to do it through the apache upgrade section on WHM.

Failing that, you can source compile a version of PHP. There are other ways ie yum and rpm but i don't suggest them.

I have only ftp.

Do you have root access to the server, or have you purchased an account from a web hosting company? You can only upgrade with root access.

To upgrade PHP you need to have a non jailed SSH account to the server. If you don't have one of these, you might want to ask your current host to see if they are willing to upgrade at the present time.

I have found that php 5 is not compatible with many scripts!! If you are upgrading your server to php 5 then have a sound research on it to avoid any issues...
