All are pretty nice depends upon your need and your knowledge, for newbie I would recommend Fedora Core 3, SuSe or Ubuntu.

I think Linspire is good for new Linux users too.

Which beer is the best

Depends mostly on the purpose of the box, but:

Red Hat (Fedora, Enterprise Linux) is easy (all relative )
Gentoo is flexible
Slackware is die hard

For productions purposes, we mostly use CentOS (R-H Enterprise) and FreeBSD. Desktop, I dunno . I have never seen a KDE desktop on my desk. Just use windows, as it is most compatible with applications.

So, you will just have to try I'm afraid. Keep us posted.

Well, Debian has a huge collection of apps and a very active group of developers. Plus using aptitude makes installation of most programs (such as Apache and MySql) a snap. Ubuntu is based on Debian, btw.

I use Ubuntu. I would recommend to everyone and everyone if my sound worked...

The current Ubuntu release has a highly unreliable sound system.

Right, I just got my hands on linspire, easy to use and fairly reliable but the software is frequently outdated.
