How Do You know If You Are Secure
What is the best way to find out if your host is secure? Is there a special test that can be run?

There is nothing like absolute security, especially on a shared server. Things you can make sure is that the server has a firewall, host doesnt offer ssh without precautions, softwares are updated and that PHP can not access files outside your sites root. from your side, you can make sure that the FTP, controlpanel, MySQL passwords are strong.

The first thing I would look at is if the host is running a firewall to secure DDOS attacks and blocks other unnecessary ports. Second, if they run a Virus Scanner to block spread of virus from FTP. Third, look at their uptime. If the uptime is bad it clearly means that the server is not stable.

Yes, we can not make sure all hosting 100% is secure ..because as long as we rent hosting and our data in other hand , it can not say secure condition.
If you want secure , you should save data in your own host.

It would be better to order a VPS.
The matter is that each VPS is separated at the operating system level and each customer runs in its own memory, CPU and disk space. This prevents your account from getting compromised.

Try using rkhunter or chkrootkit, these are good utilities to check if your hosting is secure. I believe you will need to run these as a privileged user.

Security...
I invested in Acunetix Web Security Scanner, the Consultant version. It is a outstanding tool to check your site security. Only downside.. it was expensive. So i will start offering site scans now to make up for the $4k

Staying Secure
I guess there is no full proof method to stay secure. But yes you can have maximum deterrence to online threat.
You need to have monitoring software in place and other anti phishing software and tools to prevent un authorized access to your server.

To know if your browser is viewing a secure web site, you can look in the lower right part of the window. There is a small box in the frame of the window to the left of the area that describes which zone you are in (usually the Internet zone, with a globe icon). If you see a yellow padlock icon, the web site you are viewing is a "secure web site." If the box is empty, the web site does not have a secure connection with your browser. You can also have a look at the URL: if it starts with [https://], you are on a secured page; if the URL starts with http://, you're not.

If your host is good they will reguarly have monitors that check for any modified files and intrusion attempts and block them, PHP on a shared server should be extreamly locked down to the max. Hosts should also regually change their password once a month and if the people who manage the billing and admin panel should either be running linux to be sure they dont have any virus's or should have bootcheckers like UnHackMe etc
