    Is "Hosting" Dead?

    Hi All -

Hey... good discussions here. I have been in the hosting business for close to 10 years, as a reseller, working for Microsoft, as Managing Director of HostingPortland, then owner of my own hosting company.

I think "Hosting" (the term... NOT the service) is dead.

What I mean by that is that in my experience:
    • a) Most business people don't understand the term, or even care... they just want their website online
    • b) All of the technical features are becoming overkill... who really needs 40000 of data storage for a standard website?*
    • c) Open source applications and content management systems are changing what's expected of hosting providers... a focus on what the tools offered can DO for a client, instead of the static tech. stats so often promoted
What do you think? Take the poll. I think a good brainstorm is in order.

    Yours - Scott

*Maybe this means that we are evolving to rich media sites that will require more storage space

Just curious, what would you replace the word "hosting" with?
The Web Hosting Show - The Voice of the Web Hosting World
Think of it as talk radio mixed with Web hosting discussion for both Web hosts and Web hosting clients! New episode every Monday!

Well since the world is starting to revolve around the internet, and people's life, company and information is stored on the internet, I think Hosting is a big deal. The term itself is kinda vague, I mean hosting does't just refer to internet related "housing" it's just a general term and hosting just happened to become associated with the internet style aperture.

I think Web hosting fits - no reason to change it just yet. Of course, "Online storage" has been growing as well with Web sites like photo bucket or other alternative personal backup Online options. Anything else I can think of just sounds too "wordy" for me personally...

Then again, maybe I just don't want to have to rename my podcast from the Web Hosting Show to the "Show About Storage on the Internet and Stuff".

I think for the persons who are in this business hosting as a term means much. But for the persons who just order the sites and don't know how to promote them to bring some money it means nothing.

    Absolutely Not

The market is not ever going to be done with. However, it will and is constantly evolving. Perhaps the term may change in a couple of years but the industry as a whole will continue to evolve and those who don't keep up will be lost.

This next quarter is going to be HUGE for the hosting industry.

    My $0.02.

    Thanks guys!

The market will always keep evolving, now will anything as much of an impact as Ev1 did a few years ago....doubtful.
