Thread: defrag linux?
04-05-2003, 10:18 AM #1matt2kjonesGuest
OK, not many people talk about this but have any of you actually defragged your linux drives using a tool?
think about it, if u have had a busy server going for months on end, think of how scattered your files could be.
anyway, im just wondering has anyone here used a defrag tool on redhat. If so, whats its name. Im looking for something that has been used before by someone, and they are happy with it.
Since this is going on a production server, thats why i would like to know its been used before by people, and that your happy with it.
There is no rush for this since the install is only about 6 months old.

The linux ext2 and 3 file systems are supposed to leave fragmented files. If they do, just use fsck. You might want to bring the server down to do a complete fsck though, as open files and other things may be harmful to the fsck.
