You'd better install a control panel on your server.
Paid: Cpanel (http://cpanel.com)
Paid: Directadmin (http://directadmin.com)
Free: Webmin (http://webmin.com)
Free: VHCS2 (http://vhcs.com
With these control panels you can check your settings.
I'm not giving you a direct solutions, because of the reason that you will need not to check only the PHP version, but there are alot of different check-ups to do.

Create a new .php file and insert <? phpinfo() ?> into it.
Visit this .php file and you will see all your php information.

if you have shell access, you may also check your php version with the command:

The best way to determine php version is go to server shell prompt and use command
# php -v
However, programmer can also create on temporary page and can use phpinfo().
