Thread: Starting a small datacenter

Can someone give me some ideas what I need to get my datacenter going? I'm looking at different fiber providers now. But what other sort of equipment do I need?

lol, are you sure you know what you're getting yourself into? Datacenters aren't exactly cheap to start/run, and even then you gotta keep your customers happy

Yeah what does OMS stand for? I'm not trying to start a major datacenter. I'm just looking into starting one for my organization. I just want to know what I need to get things started. We want to do everything in house an not have to outsource it to anyone else. Currently we have 100 client machines needing internet access. We want to host our own web page and intranet page. Once I can get the datacenter going I'll work on getting the domain name and designing a site.

Sorry, my own "invention" - OMS: one man show

sounds like you don't really need a large data center. you just need a few servers if that to do the various jobs you require. i couldn't tell you how to do it without more details of existing infrastructure etc.

You will need to contact fiber prociders...like Time Warner, Verio, etc. They cost a whole lot! Cogent is very affordable tho. You can get your servers from a small company (to save money). You will also need to lease a space that you can get fiber hookup. You probally need at least $100,000 to start...but that is just a guess.

I seriously recommend you stay away from building a "datacenter" until you have a lot of money coming in a month. Even a small datacenter costs a lot of money to run. This is because you want quality network providers and not resort to only cogent and williams.
