I don't think there is a relation between the two, of course if I am wrong somebody here will correct me. Both are good resources though to check up on your Web site popularity within the search engines. The Web Hosting Show - The Voice of the Web Hosting World

Well I guess there is no relation between them . As you know alexa ranks your sites with the traffic it gets daily and it also has its own backlinks checker I guess. So basically alexa is all about traffic.█ For Reliable and Affordable Web Hosting Packages, Please visit kooshin.com

Alexa ranking is determined by data that Alexa gathers from users who have installed the Alexa toolbar which is a subset of Internet users. If I install the Alexa toolbar it tracks where I visit, how often, how many pages I click, and how long I stay there. All that information gets fed back to Alexa. They have several to hundreds of thousands of people with the Alexa toolbar so they can extrapolate the relative popularity of a website and estimate its daily traffic. Alexa ranks based on the amount of traffic a site gets based on its estimate. It is a rough estimate and is skewed since the toolbar is an IE toolbar so one might imagine that sites about Firefox, Linux, and other stuff might rank lower than it actually is in reality.
Google's rank is based on a complex algorithm but essentially ranks sites based on who is linking to them. A link to a website is like a "vote" or "buzz" about that site. If somebody is linking to a site then it means it must be important. When lots and lots and lots of websites are linking to one site it causes it to be ranked very highly in Google. Of course, if a site is about sportscars and all the sites linking to it are about cats then Google tends to discount certain links. It also devalues links it finds on link pages. It's a complicated algorithm that only a few people know (for good reason) but the basic rule is backlinks.
To the larger question - what is the relationship between the two? Not much except that a site that gets lots and lots of traffic is probably getting that traffic because people are linking to it, consequently it gets ranked high in Google, and since most searches are done on Google it gets lots of traffic, and gets ranked high in Alexa...

Agree with DevilDog, I have come across many sites which have a good PR of 6 or 7 but alexa is somewhere in 600,000. There is no connection between the two.

Alexa is interesting on traffic, just one person can easily manipulate it, however Pagerank rates the 'importance' by counting links, not traffic.
