I just read an article that said ***** grew to 100,00+ clients in 3 1/2 years.
Do these companies get that big, so fast, by buying up the smaller fish, or is it mostly through advertising? I've never seen a ***** ad. Anyone have any insight?

Well. Sometimes an industry veteran gets tired of his old site and starts a new one. Then he advertises on the current site that has become an industry leader, and *BAM* starts getting about 500 people a day... then there is advertising on other sites, advertising on forums, and word-of-mouth... so it is possible... but rare.

I think hardly would an industry veteran would want to do that. It will affect business, though not to a great extent

I don't think a reputation itself can make a host grow that big.

Anyway, its 10,000 clients. It depends. Out of 10,000 clients, there may be like 10% relatives, 20% friends, 40% words of mouth, 20% advertisement, 10% walk-ins.
