A slightly different linking question..?
I'm trying to understand how Google values my website in terms of the links on individual pages. I'm sure that the correct application will help the website in the SERPs, and also make for a better experience for the user.
The website has 10 main pages (these target the most competative / highly searched for keywords in the market), then each main page has 3 pictures on it which link to inner pages. The inner pages do not get a whole lot of searches, they are really just there to expand the information of the main page. I hope this is making sense.
Main pages have a section of text before the 3 pictures, which I have used for the first link - to pass linkjuice through these 10 pages - like a heirarchy based on the amount of searches per month. So the first text link on every page looks like this:
Home Page >Link> Main page 1 >Link> Main Page 2 >Link> Main Page 3 etc.
So the 10 pages link around in a 'ring', Page 10 goes back to the home page.
All the inner pages have a link back to their 'parent' main page.
So I think this system is correct? I also want to add an external link to each page (somewhere near the bottom) as I read Google will then see my site as part of the 'web as a whole' as opposed to a solitary website with no external links. Not 100% sure if that's correct?
So my questions regarding external links are:
1) Should I link to the top website for my pages keywords - providing it is relevant to the user?
2) The first 3 pages for that keyword are all competitors, feel like i'm shooting myself in the foot by giving them a link!
3) It seems that if i want to link out from each page to a highly ranked website (for that pages keywords) without it being a competitor, the external link on virtually every page will be going out to wikipedia. Kind of seems wrong??

I really wouldn't worry about linking to external sites for no reason - Google doesn't care if you link out or not. If there's an authority site that can provide added value to your users without stealing any prospective sales from your site, I'd say link to them once on a 'Useful Sites' page or something, not on the footer of every page. But if there isn't, I wouldn't give it another thought.
You'd do better to spend your time worrying about where your links in are coming from rather than where you're going to link out to
