Normally its never the kernel that is easly hackable its the programs you run with it. As far as i know 2.4.23 is pretty secure on its own but what you install is an entire different story

Hi,
I beleive every kernel has some kind of bug or hole. You should update all the paches and keep update on kernel issues.DataCenterTalk Rate, review and Discuss about datacenters.

To check if your kernel is secure, go to:
http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/vendor/
Select vendor: Linux
Select title: kernel
Select version: your current version
It will list all known vulnerabilities. You can check the description of the vulnerability to see if it's a serious bug, and you can also check if there's a known exploit of proof-of-concept exploit released (if there is, you better upgrade your kernel).
You can check for the most recently release exploits here:

As normal practice I tend to stick to a version behind if the most is 2.6 I would use 2.4 just to give 2.6 time to be tidyed up and the bugs wrote out. 2.6.9 has really bad memory lead problems!
Laterz!
