What the best way to set up your own server?
Ive tryed seting up a small server using apache but it really sucks bandwidth away from everything else I do that involves the internet.

I dont understand very well....
You says that you install apache on your PC and its so slow ?
What is your connection speed ?

also to have any server its good to have it on a dedicated box ie a box thats just for the server not to surf aswell. try installing it on one machine then running your daily taks on another see if this helps. (its not wise to setup a web server with a 56k connection) good luck.

Can you be a little more specific as to what you're trying to do and what you're working with (IE: cable, T1, etc)? There's not going to be any easy way to setup a server if you're on a home connection. Your lower priced options would be to check out server colocation, or I would actually recommend VPS if you aren't doing a huge amount of stuff to make a server purchase worth while. If you could explain a bit more on what you're trying to do though we might can give more options

Putting the server on one box and everything else on another probably won't help much if you are sharing a dial up, cable, or DSL connection with your web server. Looking into some other options would probably be a good idea.

its not too bad if you just want a little web server, although i do urge you to look colo or other means if your thinking of setting up a webhosting biz
