am wondering if there is a good way to test FTP performance.
We suspect that the host we are with has some problem with their FTP software and that it's dropping connections. We're wondering if there is any good software out there to test this sort of thing.

Not really except pinging it like Chris has suggested. Another good test is to connect to it via ftp and really give it a hard test. If you think it's dropping connections really work it.. upload some files and see if it dies midstream.
Many ftp servers will drop your connection with any extended period of inactivity. Are you referring to that?

I thought dropping the connection depends on the FTP client u are useing. Because When i use Ws-FTp its disconnets me in 5 minutes but Cute frp don't disconnect even after 30 minutes of inactivity
