I'm curious to know what others consider good uptime from their webhost? I monitor my site and it seems that I have a lot of (unscheduled) downtime but I want to know if I am justified about e-mailing my host about it.

If the host does not have a SLA then theres not much you can do, if they state 99% uptime in the agreement they have to provide the 99% uptime else you can most probably get something from it.
The answer to your question will vary depepnding on the host.

What I can say is that your web host may argue that his server is not down during the period of time. Only Apache is down. What most monitoring software offer is apache scanning.

Im not sure about other hosts, although we usually consider the customers site down as "downtime" due to the fact its the time that their site is down

It all depens on the host himself. Do he regard a downtime as a server downtime, network downtime or site downtime ?
1: Server Downtime
It is when the server faces some problems and cannot be brought online.
2: Network Downtime
Server is still working in perfect condition, but faces some network problems.
3: Site Downtime
Server and network are perfectly OK, POP3 can be accesses but site cannot. Most probably an Apache problem.
So, read up on TOS / AUP / SLA before you sign up with any hosting company.
