does anyone know of any good free unix based network monitors that will check ping, ftp, http, etc. on multiple hosts?

Why not try pinging from different networks.
Try easymonitor. So far I like them better then alertra =P.

I would strongly reccommend nagios. I love it to be honest. The features are great. Its a strong program. If you know how to set it up and edit it where needed it is the best program ever.
The way I have set it up is to have a centeral server and all problems get reported to the centeral server. It took me a while to setup but it is better overall, saves a lot of trouble
