A few years back, I remember the talk was that all the little hosting companies would be 'gobbled up' by a few big and powerful ones. I know this has happened to some extent, but there are still thousands upon thousands of hosting companies out there.
Does anyone think this will ever change? I am not for monopolies, but to make a choice between this many options seems like a shot in the dark.

that is why you have to shop around and see what other people think of their services.
It is true, there seems to be an inflation of hosting companies coming out so it will be hard picking the right one but, just set your priorities straight and you will be able to find the host most suitable to you.

yes the hosting industry is flooded with new hosts... includeing me lol. anyway if you really wanna find a good host don't look for the cheapest.... their are so many hosts cuting the prices so low. IE 5 dollars for 30 gb of bandwidth... which is impossible and impossible to give with good service and support.
So basically look for a midrange host.. and find out testimonials from their customers.
Basically you go for a host that offers a lot of service with a low price they will give you crap.
Unless they are having a sale or special you will find out the hardway that with a host that offers you 30gb of bandwidth for 5 bucks is going to give you horrible quality bandwidth, (eg. 2.5kb download speed.)

If they have plesk, i believe they cannot oversell =).
But it is very true. Overselling can reduce a hosting company with,
1. bad quality bandwidth
2. no hd space
3. crap service

I agree with this topic. Nowadays 13 years old kid start his Hosting company and call him self " I AM A HOSTING PROVIDER" .. But as Essential said Some small new companies offer great customer support because they have few Number of clients and they want to attract more people into thier business ( they do personal Supports because they have Enough time to do so  ) .

There are many new web hosts coming up due to the idea of reselling. Most companies are just resellers who do not even own a dedicated server to run up business. Web Hosting used to be in very high demand at an expensive rate, therefore, no one could really afford to do reselling, unlike now, a big price plunge.

He bought a reselers account and there he was calling himself a hosting provider.
Ofcorse I went back 1 week ago to find that he had went bust."Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning."

I feel that owners of webhosting companies can be of any age, as long as the sense of maturity is there. Once there's maturity, he will be responsible for his deeds.
