Care to tell what your site is about ?

the best way to get your site around is by getting links to your site, from other sites
Now, your thinking to yourself that not many people will click your link, and it wont help much
But thats not why you do it
When search engines spider peoples sites, they click through links on sites.
The more links that go to your site, the higher your rank will be
so put your link in your signitures on sites, and wherever else you can (unless its any type of spamming which im against)

Also, Word of Mouth is One powerful tool. =)

As northwind mentioned, word of mouth/referrals are key. However, if you are looking for advertising exposure online I recommend looking into Google Adwords and Overture. They both handle "targeted" ppc listings based on your own criteria and the content of your website. People experience different results with these tools, but they can definately help to get your name out there quickly if you target the right key phrases. I would also recommend focusing on your link popularity - its a tedious and ongoing process, but important. Check out good resources like searchenginewatch.com for a lot of articles on the subject.

To get listed over at top search engines, it's a high price to pay, but I guess, it should be worth it. I think to be listed at Yahoo Top Ten, you have to pay USD299 per year.

Word of mouth, as northwind mentiond, is always the best method. You can always try making small banner which people can put on their site and advertise your site for free."Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning."

Yahoo charges to be listed but that doesn't mean you will be in the top 10.
You have to figure out who your target audience is and the more focused the better. Then you have to figure out where this target audience looks for hosting. Then test out different types of advertisement to hit this audience. Measure what is working and what is not. You'll need to spend some time and money doing a lot of testing.

Anyway, if you want to could submit your site to my host directory (Ascelon.com).
It's brand new, but it's growing fast
