I recently tried canceling with this webhosting company and have since learned that it is a scam. Is there anyone else that has had a similar experience with them? If so could you post your experience.
Also, I have contacted the LA district attorney's office who are now looking into the company, but the case would be much stronger if any on this forum could write to the DA and give your details. I can give you the address if you are willing to do it. It could bring this scam to an end so that others don't get ripped off.

I can't say that I have ever heard of them. How come you're not using one of the main stream providers such as HostICan, HostGator, Lunarpages?

Hmmm. This 1dollarhosting.com seems to be still operational. I just visited their website. If they are scam, then they should have been put down way before - back in 2002 with that complaint.
I am no fan of this host.. Nor I am with them. In fact, I just saw them from this thread. But if this their site is up, does it mean they are getting away with scamming people?
What did they say when you tried cancelling and why did you say they are a scam?

In November 2004, I purchased website hosting services from 1dollarhosting (a division of Webcountry). I prepaid a total of $73 on my credit card.
In June 2005 Webcountry blocked my access to my website files hosted on their system. I was unable to access or update my site. I called their technical support line several times and left voicemails. None of my calls was returned. I emailed techsupport@webcountry to inquire about what type of problems they were experiencing. No one replied to my email. Webcountry's lack of response to all of my attempts to contact them led me to believe that they had ceased operations. I transferred my website to another hosting service a few days later.
After having no contact whatsoever with Webcountry, I received an unsolicited email receipt from them for $24 in November 2005. I emailed "firstname.lastname@example.org" the next day to ask why I had received a receipt when I had made no purchases from them. Webcountry never replied.
At the same time, I had a mysterious charge of $24 appear on my credit card account. The merchant name was "Philco, Inc." of Simi Valley, CA. I did not recognize the merchant or the charge, so I disputed it with my credit card company. The credit card company advised me that the merchant never replied to the chargeback, so the case was closed with the removal of the charge from my account.
When I did a routine audit of my credit report a few months ago, I discovered a collection action from Webcountry for $187. I have never been contacted by Webcountry or their collection agency. This fraudulent collection action was quietly slipped onto my credit report without my knowledge in April 2006. I disputed the collection item with the credit bureaus. I did not know what this $187 was for, since I had not had any business dealings with Webcountry since they suspended my account in June 2005.
I filed formal complaints with:
--California Department of Consumer Affairs
--California Attorney General
--Better Business Bureau of the Southland
--Deputy DA for consumer affairs in the Los Angeles DA office
--Wisconsin Department of Consumer Protection
--Federal Trade Commission
The BBB notified me that Webcountry never replied to their inquiry. (Big surprise!!!) The BBB closed their file. They have a boatload of complaints against Webcountry. None of the government agencies in California was interested in investigating this or helping me. The Wisconsin Department of Consumer Protection wrote to Webcountry but never received a reply. The FTC never replied to my complaint.
In the mean time, Webcountry dinged my credit card again for another $24. This time they did it only 11 months after the last time. They did it just weeks before I contacted my credit card company to cancel the account and open a fraud investigation.
It's interesting to read the 1dollarhosting TOS. It says that Webcountry can cancel a customer's account at any time on a whim, and the customer is still liable for ongoing payments. It also states that the only way to cancel services with them is to fill out the form on the Webcountry site. That is a dead link. The webcountry website no longer exists.
If anyone is pursuing legal action against Webcountry, I would like to be included. This company cannot be allowed to continue to defraud consumers like this. I don't understand why no government agency in California will help me.
I am especially disappointed with the California Attorney General's office and the Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney's office. This company is defrauding customers left and right, and no one will take legal action against them.

WOW! that is quite a story. never heard of them before though? I think its starting to be better to stick to the bigger players like lunarpages hostgator and the like.
