I'm new so bare with me!
I don't know where to post this so, Mods, feel free to move it.
I live in the country and have no choice but to use a satellite ISP. Due to the high ping times I can't stay connected to an IRC channel. What I am looking for (I think!) is a third party server to bounce off of, hoping it will keep me connected.
Am I on the right track and can someone point me in the right direction?

I realize that there has been no response to my post but I hate to give up! Today I finally found a server to bounce off of. I got set up with RisingNet and gave it a try. I was disconnected just about as fast as normal.
The tech that helped me get set up said it was due to my latency. (I had already told him why I wanted a bouncer.) He then told me that a server/bouncer would not help. Is he correct? If so, I may as well give up!

My problem is solved and since it took me several months and 2 ISPs I thought I would post what the solution was just in case someone else is having trouble. First, a supper fellow by the name of Tommi answered me via email and after a few mails back and forth, he had me do a "raw ping" on the server line. I had a "Ping" prg that I had tried, but I initiated it before the server was up. What he had me do was: /raw PING <myservername.net>.
This helped but only fixed the problem after a simply timer was set to ping every few minutes. I have not been disconnected since!
Thank everyone for their consideration in this matter and I hope this thread will help others.

screen is also an excellent utility to use on most *nix based platforms to close and resume a terminal window without closing out the applications.
