Link popularity check
Link popularity is an important factor to rank you site higher in Search Result. You can easily count how many site has linked your site. To calculate how many site has linked your site in Google search by simply typing site:http://www.yoursite.com and will show the search result and number of site that has placed your link. You can do the same thing in yahoo or MSN search engines.

I am sorry but I have to reply to this post which appears to have been done in error.
I say this because the query shown actually returns a list of indexed pages for your site, not the links pointing to your site.
To get this information you need to use link: followed by your domain name to get the links pointing to your site on google.
But that only shows you how to tell how many links you have. It doesn't tell you how to help get more links.
A good strategy is the foundation for any successful link building campaign.
You need to know the types of links you need to acquire. Therefore one of the best things to do is to determine what the engines consider as a good link. The way to do this is to look at who links to your competitors. Try and figure out why these links are considered important, and then request more like them.
Also, don't forget to see if you can get links from the same sites as your competitors. It may mean spending some money, but if it's a highly important site, such an expenditure could spell the difference between an average link campaign and a highly successful link campaign.
