What exactly is "overselling"
Hey there,
I was just curious about what overselling meant. I read about it in the main forums but nobody explained what it was..they just said that some hosting companies oversell. If somebody could explain what that means, that would really help me out.
Thanks,
Steve

All hosts oversell, its how well they manage and maintain their servers and resources that you need to keep an eye out for.
Overselling is exactly what it sounds like, selling more space/bandwidth than you physically have. Odds are the webhosts customers are never going to use all of the space and bandwidth provided, and overselling is not an issue as long as that webhost maintains and manages their servers properly.

As techguy said.
I will add that Overselling is not a recommended way to run your hosting company. Too much of it can cause severe downtime.

Hey smoerdyk have you searched the forums? There are a lot of topics about this. I posted many good articles about this too besides techguy said it all. Honestly I don't think you can list all the problems overselling can cause to your server/business.

If you can keep overselling under control, and have the experience to know when it is time to expand resources or add servers, than it is not always a bad thing. For the new web host, I think that it is a better idea to stick with selling the resources you actually have.

yes surely overselling is quite not a good deal as many users prefer not to be hosted by overselling companies.
- 11-13-2005, 01:13 PM #9Ados GuestI agree with that sticking with selling the resources you actually have because if you start overselling your going to end up with more problems.
