Do I need an SSL certificate for a website that allows people to make donations over
It is technically a foundation, a non profit organization website, which will allow people to make donations for the cause. Is purchasing an SSL certificate for this site a good idea?
If i have to purchase then which one is better for such a site?

Yes, as the payment is involved and user has to enter their sensitive information so you should setup SSL as this gives users a security sign that their sensitive information will be securely transferred. There are several providers that offer SSL, you can check RapidSSL , Godaddy etc.

This is a certificate which is installed on a secure server. It is used to identify the merchant using it and to encrypt the credit card, and other sensitive, data.

The only time you need a SSL is when you are making a secure area on your site that would entail private or confidential information OR you are accepting payments where the end user is entering information on your web and your web site handles the transaction. Now if you do donations by sending people to Paypal, Google Checkout or 2Checkout or etc (basicly somewheres other than your web site) then you are not required to have a SSL for that transaction.
Also do note if you accept CC's on your site directly then you would want to encrypt the CC information in your DB and make sure your not storing CCV numbers.123DomainStore - Low Priced Domains

If you use paypal to receive your donation, you don't need a ssl certificate. Ssl certificte is required if you want to keep your customers informations ( adress, phone number ... ) in your system. Like trex-networks told you, you can find certificate around $10 /year. I thing for the low cost, ssl certificate make your website more professional.

It is forever high-quality to have an SSL certificate, as this will encrypt sensitive user information, although it shouldn't be necessary in your case, unless you are manually charge the donations.
You can have a look at our SSL certificates here:

The basic one will suit your needs best.
