Try Cerberus Helpdesk (free version). It is a great script with many characteristics. You can too take a look at HelpCenterLive, I have heard effective feedback about them also.

There is nothing like making your own using PHP.
but if you are looking for one already made I would recommend googling what you are looking for, there are so many out there free or not and my moto is: "You are your judge". We as a community can not recommend to your preference.

I agree. It completely depends on your requirements and personal preferences. If you are looking for live chat only, then PHP Live chat is free. The helpdesk options within fantastico and softaculous are also decent. However, if you want a professional full fledged solution, then you would have to spend on licenses. Best amongst these would be Cerberus (for helpdesk), LivePerson (live chats). Kayako Support Suite & Smartertrack offer a solution where you get live chats and helpdesk together in the same interface.

Live2support is another option for you if you are more concern for rich features, less price, better customer support and user friendly.
