Keyword density is the ratio between the number of words in your article and the number of times your keyword appears in the article, eg. you write and article on "dog training" with "dog training" being the keyword you are targeting, the article is 100 words long and the phrase "dog training" appears 5 times - your keyword density = 5%. When writing articles try keeping your keyword density to around 3% or else it will start getting awkward to read and will also look a bit spammy to the search engines.

Keyword density is expressed as a %. Eg if you had 100 words on a page and you used the same keyword in those 100 words 3 times - the keyword density for that page would be 3%.
There is also a different level of tolerance between the different search engines as to the degree of density permitted before a penalty is imposed.
The keyword is entered into the search engine algorithm as a mathematical calculation, such resualt.

If keyword arises only once in a page of one thousand words, it has a lower keyword density than keyword that arises four times in page of similar length. As keyword density is ratio of word that is being searched for against total words displaying on the web page.

If you are familiar with the SEO systems being used by Google so you already know that higher keyword densities are not working any longer. You may gain some benefits from the improved Yahoo and Bing ranks but the Google portal nowadays pays attention to the off page elements like links more.
