Can you hyphen a single word for a domain name?

According to what I have read about two worded domain names, you can hyphen them and Google recognizes them as two separate words (my-domain.com). Google also will recognize mydomain.com as two separate words too. So my question is if Google can recognize mydomain.com as two words (my domain), will Google recognize one hyphenated word as a complete word. For example centi-meter.com recognized as centimeter. If Google will recognize a hyphenated word as a single word, then how does that effect SEO?

You can definitely have the hyphen in the domain. I would go without the hyphen if you can though but if the non-hyphen one is taken, go for it.

As I know, the majority of webmasters avoid hyphen within their domain names, so I'd recommend you to use another domain extension or paraphrase it.
